We had an excellent day and are looking forward to going back to Hainault Forest High very soon!

Team Building!

As part of our Ready to Learn topic, we were very lucky to get a visit from Neil and Rob and they taught us all about team work and how important it is to succeed. I feel that this will be an exciting time for all, children and teachers included! Year 6 is full of amazing opportunities which we are sure we will enjoy and learn so much from. As I have said many times already to the class, they are now the oldest children in the school and I am sure that they will be fantastic role models to the rest of John Bramston Primary School. This is an important responsibility and one which I know they will take very seriously.

We begin the term with our 'Ready to Learn' topic which explores the different ways in which we learn and what helps us to learn effectively. This year will be full of learning and the children will take many happy memories and great experiences away with them when they move on to secondary school.

I hope you all had a great summer break. Mr Williams spent some time in Berlin and York and I am now fully rested and ready for a new challenge in year 6!

Mr Williams.

Hi,

As we fast approach the end of the year, I look back with many fond memories. We held our tuck shop on Friday break time and we made £103:40! After paying Mr Williams back £18:40. we had made a profit of £85:00! During the preparation for our tuck shop we had a debate, wrote persuasive letters to Miss Jennings, made advertising posters, filmed our own TV adverts which were shown on the school TV system and we even wrote our own business plans! We have now decided, as a class, to use our profits to organise a class trip to the cinema! They put on a fantastic show and even stuck around afterwards to give some autographs to the children. The message they brought with them was that riding a bike has three advantages:

1. It is good for your body

2. It is great for the environment

3. It is enjoyable

They also had a clear message that practice makes perfect and to never give up because you can achieve whatever you put your mind to....a message that fits perfectly with John Bramston's motto, "You can achieve if you believe". Take a look at the photos, the children and I loved it!

Beneath the Surface

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5gJzlHjCd0U/TfHKjhfpP0I/AAAAAAAAF9M/jILazdl-Htg/s320/year%2B5%2B024.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5616492921943048002" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-M_grM3icrn4/TfHKizNJZJI/AAAAAAAAF9E/bQKLMYbj-CM/s320/year%2B5%2B022.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5616492909517431954" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fCgvhm8S1x4/TfHKh1InSgI/AAAAAAAAF88/K6cI7sbusEY/s320/year%2B5%2B021.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5616492892855421442" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pvwRBD8Wx9c/TfHKhX_TqpI/AAAAAAAAF80/sg0TwkT_6es/s320/year%2B5%2B018.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5616492885031758482" />
In 5W we have been looking at the subject "Beneath The Surface" and one of the topics we looked at was clay modelling. My name is Mr Williams and as you probably all know, I am the new class teacher for 5W (previously 5H). I am going to keep this first post short but I just wanted to let you know a little about myself.
I am now in my sixth year of teaching and have just moved from a primary school in Plaistow. I take a keen interest in all that my pupils do and I intend to become a new face at football club. I will, whenever possible, be at the team's football games and I understand that there is a league and cup game approaching.
I have really enjoyed my first week in 5W and, as promised, I have learnt all of my pupils names!
There will be a new post following very soon, as I believe that this blog is a fantastic way of you getting an insight into what goes on behind the doors of 5W!
If you would like to come and speak to me, please do not hesitate to ask me and we can arrange a convenient time.
I am looking forward to a bright 2011 which will be full of exciting times for myself and my pupils,

Mr Williams.

Victorian Activity

Hello Year 5

Ms Habib has finally begun to organise photographs of your activities within school. We linked all our arts activities to our topic on Ancient Greek myths. The children wrote their own myths and invented some scary looking mythical creatures to include in their stories. Using these ideas, the children drew pastels, painted paper plates and made clay masks. Here are some examples of the work produced by the children. Well done everybody – a really enjoyable week!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; This is a film about an old man reflecting on his life time memories. We used drama activities to explore the character's thoughts and feelings. From this the chidren then wrote the film up as a story. Check out the film and then read Subha's story.
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v11.nonxt3.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D7f958b85ba5b5bf3%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331676632%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D6FB129D93D7B3F7389E54EF75A3CB0CDB98E51F0.43B5BB4F64F40704797338F964FD9FF5875A2A7C%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D7f958b85ba5b5bf3%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3D3aqJghlVJErVX43qu4_QPqCV8lU&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Sam sat at his piano. Alone. Gradually and without thinking his fingers started playing Alice’s favourite tune. Missing his beloved wife, the sound of the piano drifted around the room. Reassuringly, a faint image formed beside him and tenderly placed a warm kiss on his cheek. Nothing felt the same without her.

Sam continued playing the piano, one note after the other. He could feel a burning in his heart. Loud crashes and bangs filled Sam’s ears as he knelt down, dressed in army uniform with a medic sign on his helmet.
‘Arrgh!’ he could hear as his closest friend crashed to the floor. Emotionally, Sam knelt down with blood dripping from his arm. Feeling terrible as he couldn’t save his friend, Sam hopelessly looked up to the dark, sparkling sky.

A strange feeling went down his spine, as his memories turned towards his childhood. Receiving a huge, sparkly, purple present wrapped in a gold ribbon, Sam wondered what it was. As quick as a flash, he unwrapped it and found a wooden hobby horse. He fell in love with it as soon as he saw it and rode it every day.

As Sam’s childhood memories came to an end, he noticed that the hobby horse moved onto his grandson, who came riding it towards him. Ben sat down beside him and they played the last not together. They looked at each other and gave each other a warm smile.

Feelings!!

As part of our 'Beneath the Surface' topic we have been looking at feelings. We have been learning about the importance of clean water and the process of filtering water. The children used a range of filters (J-cloths, paper towels, stones etc) to find out which filter provided the cleanest water. It was a messy but fun activity that was enjoyed by all. Well done to Veronika, Lauren and Johnjo who filtered their water several times to produce the cleanest results in class (Not that I would advise anybody to drink it!).
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/S2FwyXONIBI/AAAAAAAACRk/opWv0jtQCTk/s200/SDC10758.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431746636114894866" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/S2FwI0lE95I/AAAAAAAACRM/EqFUkWggei4/s200/SDC10732.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431745922440951698" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/S2FwyAq0qOI/AAAAAAAACRc/bWnFPqSteF4/s200/SDC10751.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431746630060910818" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/S2FwxlYw0rI/AAAAAAAACRU/J5DD2FQtxqs/s200/SDC10733.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5431746622737404594" />

Welcome back

A very belated welcome back to school! I hope everybody enjoyed their Christmas break – whether or not you celebrated Christmas. This term will be as busy as ever – our topic work is based on Water and Africa. We will be looking at the way some African communities use water and why it is a very precious resource. We will also be looking at ways that we can save water. Already we are finding out that some of our habits in this country do not help to conserve water! We are very lucky to be able to work with a visiting sculptor, who will be helping us to design and make a water feature that reflects our topic. It is hoped that the finished sculpture will be displayed in the school’s conservation area, when completed.

Eid

Some of our children celebrated Eid last Friday. In PE, the children also explored how they could use their bodies to make bridges.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SwVZ3vZI-_I/AAAAAAAAB9s/qQw0pQUh8x4/s320/SDC10265.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405825741877738482" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SwVZ3ejsMWI/AAAAAAAAB9k/dxqjNLiQqc4/s320/SDC10573.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405825737358586210" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SwVZ3NxHREI/AAAAAAAAB9c/11xBUkzDSQA/s320/SDC10569.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405825732851483714" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SwVZ299xZYI/AAAAAAAAB9U/cYL_nj_W80A/s320/SDC10568.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405825728609609090" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SwVZ2kkPgxI/AAAAAAAAB9M/qVzPe1pTBZY/s320/SDC10567.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405825721791644434" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SwVbQKQEmtI/AAAAAAAAB98/E-M3IFtm-fw/s320/SDC10264.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405827260915948242" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SwVbP7Y7wnI/AAAAAAAAB90/1P8RAWpMZ3c/s320/SDC10260.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405827256926585458" />

Holidays

Just to wish everybody a great half-term break. The children had a fantastic time (although a little disappointed that the great man himself was unable to attend!!). The children were put into four teams - England, Spain, Sweden and France. Fairlop Primary School also attended; the children were placed into another four teams - Germany, Argentina, Brazil and Holland. The children learnt about the variety of roles involved in football, they also played in a football tournament. The children earned points throughout the day for good sportsmanship, team effort, individual skills as well as healthy options in their lunch packs. The points were totalled at the end of the day - Germany were the overall winners (Fairlop), but the scores were very close! One team member, from each team was awarded a medal for their outstanding contribution to the day. In 5B James F.W. and Lucas were medal winners. Congratulations boys - well deserved!

The children were very well behaved throughout the day; they were a credit not only to the school and families but most importantly, themselves.A huge thank you to all the parents that came with us. Lots of photos were taken and a small selection is shown below.
<img style="float:left; The drama session was separated into two sessions - first the children experienced what it would be like in a Victorian classroom, with a very strict Victorian Inspector to assess their behaviour and learning as well as my teaching!!Fortunately we passed!
The second session involved drama activities that enabled the children to learn about life during the Victorian era, particularly for poor children. This linked very well into our literacy focus book - 'Street Child'. As you can see from the photos,the children threw themselves into the activities and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.It was great to see some children dressed up in Victorian costumes.Well done 5B!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sq9WcqAA89I/AAAAAAAABiU/wnaGdHkIWkM/s320/victorian+piccies+2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381615130041709522" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sq9WdOZvQTI/AAAAAAAABic/HlStmhj6wLQ/s320/victorian+piccies+3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381615139813278002" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sq9WbaSzmDI/AAAAAAAABiE/kR04YLzdT8s/s320/victorian+piccei.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381615108645689394" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sq9WcKRH9iI/AAAAAAAABiM/MvsnhftNaIY/s320/victorian+picceis.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381615121523537442" />

Welcome Back!!

Welcome back. I hope everyone had a great summer break.I trust everyone is looking forward to a new school year; our new creative curriculum will ensure an exciting and interesting learning experience for all involved!

To kick-start our learning, we have a 'Victorian School Inspector' visiting us on Monday 14th September. The children had worked very hard in preparation for it and were a real credit to themselves. Thank you also to those parents who were able to attend. I know many of the children were really pleased to see you there.

Gamalan
Last Friday, 5B were lucky enough to attend another Gamalan session at Redbridge Music Centre. As the weather was so much warmer and drier, we were able to take a leisurely stroll through the park to the music centre. The children were very well-behaved and enjoyed the outing. Eleanor Writes:

On Friday 19th of June 2009 we went to Redbridge music centre. The instruments we played came from Indonesia. We had to take our shoes off to respect the tradition before entering the gamelan.
We played on lots of instruments and learnt lots of history about Indonesia. We drew pictures of the instruments and played songs on them. We really enjoyed going to Redbridge music centre.

Arts week

During Arts week, the children looked at Indian patterns and when they were used. We looked at Rangoli and Mendi patterns. The children worked very hard on their patterns and explored a range of media, especially with the rangoli patterns; some children transferred their designs onto ceramic tiles and used glass paint to add colour. Other children transferred their designs onto cartridge paper and added colour using pastel chalks. As you can see their efforts were worthwhile!
<img style="float:left; I hope everybody has a restful and enjoyable half term break.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/ShUOoIOTb5I/AAAAAAAABP0/9QB13q767gM/s320/101_0539.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338189015882624914" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/ShUOntLnIoI/AAAAAAAABPs/C-R-5oPhZcs/s320/101_0538.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338189008623575682" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/ShUOnhyDEbI/AAAAAAAABPk/_nTwt6oP9Ws/s320/101_0537.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338189005563564466" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/ShUOnbUiPoI/AAAAAAAABPc/Mnv-FUmxBvs/s320/101_0539.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338189003829165698" />

Art/DT - making cushions

As part of our Victorian topic, we learned about the Victorian designer William Morris. The children have created their own cushion covers in the style of Morris. They used printing techniques and fabric paint on one side. On the other side the children experimented with tie-dye. To finish off their designs, the children used a variety of sewing techniques to add detail. The project involved a lot of hard work and patience - but as you can see from the results, it was well-worth it!! Well done 5B.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sfm1rsB2nxI/AAAAAAAABMc/UY-ohYO1rLk/s200/101_0535.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330491396127629074" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sfm1re5oD_I/AAAAAAAABMU/mFSm9TlAHOs/s200/101_0534.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330491392603459570" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sfm1gFXl_XI/AAAAAAAABMM/xoqPb0R6Jt4/s200/101_0534.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330491196771270002" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sfm1f0g_1SI/AAAAAAAABME/khs_XnaOAUw/s200/101_0533.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330491192247309602" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sfm1fjd__mI/AAAAAAAABL8/kL6PK2OuFSI/s200/101_0530.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330491187671334498" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sfm1fcj3bnI/AAAAAAAABL0/RcMlLl8Kkxc/s200/101_0529.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330491185816890994" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sfm1fFG_V6I/AAAAAAAABLs/h4-X06hRn1U/s200/101_0528.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330491179521759138" />

Bag Day

As we have already mentioned, the class received visitors from a recycling company to talk about the importance of recycling and to make bags. The bags were a huge success with all the children.Posted are some pictures of a small sample of bags made. I only wish we could post them all onto the blog - they look great!!

Here's what Praveen had to say about the day -

Bag Day

On 28th March in the morning Y5B had two special people come to visit us from a recycling company to teach us how to recycle and reuse. We made bags out of unwanted pillow cases and old bits of clothes. We had a discussion about where the rubbish goes and how big land fills had become. They said that we could recycle old stuff or reuse it rather then putting it in the bin. We had loads of fun making bags. We made the whole class room messy! We had a competition about who would make the most people jealous by our bag. The recycling people said that if we are about 50 years old and had put a bottle at the dump when we were 5 years old, the bottle would still be there today. That made us think! We had lots of fun with them and learnt a lot.

Also Emily R writes -

Bag Day

On the 28th March, Y5B had two people come to visit us from a recycling company. They came in to make bags with us out of old pillow cases and bits of old clothes. We had a big discussion about why we should recycle and reuse different objects. We found out that the plastic that is used to make carrier bags takes fifty years to rot. We had loads of fun making the bags because we got to make loads of mess; unfortunately we had to tidy it up after! We made some really great bags with pictures of a natural environments glued on to them using lots of different colors. Everyone had a really great time and can’t wait to show their families what fantastic bags they made.

Now have a look at some of the bags made -

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SdSXDSeHnfI/AAAAAAAABG0/hVXkdKcXdO8/s200/bag+pictures+011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320043142584966642" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SdSXDCfBSiI/AAAAAAAABGs/OclYlSWMMYk/s200/bag+pictures+010.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320043138293778978" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SdSXCxurzMI/AAAAAAAABGk/-LJoPcPI7e4/s200/bag+pictures+006.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320043133796076738" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SdSXC2p5XdI/AAAAAAAABGc/I3D1vhO2MNc/s200/bag+pictures+003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320043135118171602" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SdSXCqqf4DI/AAAAAAAABGU/X2QVQ0YRwmw/s200/bag+pictures+005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320043131899469874" />

I hope everybody has a great Easter break and I'll see you all next term!

Making Bags

This morning we had visitors from a recycling company. We left at 1.00 pm. It took us half an hour to get there, but it was a very healthy walk for us. We couldn’t have asked for a better day to go because it was a beautiful day. When we got there at half past 1, a man called Mr. Homes came over and told us what we were going to do. When we all saw the instruments we were all a bit confused because we hadn’t seen those instruments before in our lives. We had to guess what country the instruments had come from. Some of us said India and some of us said China, he said we were half right because they come from Indonesia. We had to be separated into 2 groups. There was group 1 and group 2. Group 1 went in first but they had to take our shoes off as a sign of respect. When we went in we were put with an instrument and then we went through what beaters we had to play them with. Gamelan instruments originate from two countries – Java and Bali. We played on the Java instruments. There are 600 different instruments. We saw 15 percussion instruments.We watched a film at the end about the instruments. We really enjoyed it and didn’t what to leave. We had a great day.

Anil -
On the 20th of March we went to the Music Center in Redbridge. First we had to walk from the school to the Center. The walk took about 20 minutes. When we arrived to play the music we had to take of our shoes as a sign of respect. There was different kinds of instruments to play, which originated from Bali and Java, Indonesia. We concentrated on Java because it our first time and Bali was too quick for us. When we started to play we learnt that it was a skill passed from generation to generation, the Indonesians had to learn through memory as each part of the instrument had no letters or numbers to them. We were lucky because we had numbers to help us . We where split in to two groups while one group was playing, the other one was sketching their favorite instruments. There was an instrument called a-gong. Everyone liked it because it was big and made lots of noise, but still all of them where good to play. While we were coming back we had good time and it was healthy walk back. We really enjoyed it. It was fantastic.

Book week

Book week was a very busy week! the children enjoyed a range of activities and fun days.
Emily R writes - John Bramston celebrated Book Week in style this year we had lots of activities and loads of fun. Two guys came to our school to tell us stories their names were Phil and Gary and they were from wizard story tellers. Both the year 5 and 6 classes enjoyed 4 different stories. They were absolutely marvelous. The best thing about them was that they made the story up using our ideas so you’ll never hear our story anywhere else. They used the whole class in the story and made us sound really funny. We were all surprised to hear that Miss. Linstead would throw a hissy fit about someone taking her chocolate cake, but we were not surprised to hear Mohamed had lost his brain. Luckily it was found at the bottom of the lost property bin and was small enough to pop back in his head via his mouth. We all really laughed at the story and had a fantastic time.
Emily C also writes - Book week at John Bramston was a huge success as everybody enjoyed themselves. There were plenty of activities such as looking at books, reading books making book writing stories or hearing stories. On Thursday the school was allowed to dress up as our favorite book characters. Most children dressed up and it was great fun it was nice to see some of the nursery had dressed up also. In the infants there were a lot of princesses and superheroes. In the juniors there were all sorts of costumes some were from High School Musical. Even some teachers dressed up as well like Mrs. Khan dressed up as the big bad wolf, Mrs. Eshan was Little Red Riding Hood, and Mrs. Edgecombe made a wonderful Cruella D’Ville.

This week the class will be visiting the Redbridge Music Centre for a Gamalan music session. The topic was launched (no pun intended) with a visit to Redbridge Drama Centre. The children used a variety of drama activities to learn about space. Some of the children have great imaginations which made for an interesting and fun afternoon. The children really enjoyed themselves and were a credit to the school and their families.Well Done 5B
Check out the pictures:
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sbj9hSYuqaI/AAAAAAAAA8U/Gw4x3e0jSig/s320/Picture+041.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312274508796570018" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sbj-DOJiHlI/AAAAAAAAA8k/Ej1lTm_PFzA/s320/Picture+031.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312275091774643794" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/Sbj94T8DYzI/AAAAAAAAA8c/PUrGyZmmEQE/s320/Picture+044.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312274904350155570" />

Welcome back!

Welcome back - hope you all had a good half term break. This term looks to being another busy time. We have book week coming up next week, which includes a visit to Redbridge Drama Centre on Wednesday. Please ensure that all permissions slips are returned asap.

Many of the children seemed to have enjoyed the week's holiday. Here is what Bernice and Alozie have to say:

Alozie writes:

One day my family and I woke up in the morning and decided that we should go bowling. We all got ready and then we packed the car with our bowling gear. We packed refreshments and set off at 2:00. We left late because it was disco night. We played a couple of games and everybody came 1st in at least one game. It was great fun. We also had some ice cream. After we had turns on the motor bikes and rides and other things. Next, we had dinner and went home at 11:00 o’clock. When we arrived home, we watched scary movies until 2:00. But me and my dad had some bonding time, we talked until 2:40am so we went to bed quite late, but we all enjoyed ourselves.

The next day we had a surprise from our Mum who had booked us to do the activities at the Redbridge Leisure Centre, GO BONKERS.
We were there at 10.30am, but the actual activities started at 11.00am. There were so many inflatable activities. My best one was the gladiator tournament which I won most of the time. My sister’s and I had so much fun. We were all tired when we got home, but it was great fun.

Bernice writes:

My half term was really exciting. Me and my little brother made a candy house out of chocolate biscuits and candy canes. On Tuesday we went to the cinema and watched ‘Hotel for Dogs’. Wednesday, I went to my cousin’s party and we had a karaoke night and I acted like Britney Spears. It was really fun and we had lots of fun. On Thursday we had a feast of candy and I felt really bloated! On Friday we had to go to my Nan’s house then we had to clean up our rooms because they were dirty, we had a 6 month old burger then my little brother took a bite out of it and it tasted nice!

Snowy days!

For homework last week, the children were asked to write about their experiences over the snowy days - and what fun many of them had! Here are just two examples of the children's work:

Simran writes: The first I knew it was snowing was when Mum came rushing into my room shouting, "Get out of bed Simran! Look at the snow!"
It was awesome. I had never seen that much snow in my life.The snow looked like a carpet of cotton wool, I was so excited I couldn't wait to go out.We spent the whole day building snowmen and having snowball fights with my cousins.

Eleanor writes: On Monday I was very lucky to wake up and see thick, white snow. I was so excited and even more so when I found out school was closed! My Mum said "Quickly Eleanor!Get yourself dressed and wrap up warm." I was allowed to go to the fields with my friends. The snow was really fluffy, thick, cold and just right for snowballs. When we got to the fields, we happily played in the snow all morning. My dog, Jaggers, excitedly ran round and round the enormous snowman we built. I had a brilliant day and will remember it forever.

Literacy - 'The Piano'

Over the past few weeks, Y5 have been studying film narrative. 'The Piano' tells the story of an elderly man (Grandad as he became known in 5B), who remembers some sad times whilst playing the piano. This film has no dialogue but is accompanied by piano music. The children learned a great deal - looking at how camera angles, light, sound and colour can portray the mood of the story. The children have also used drama to explore Grandad's feelings as he passed from one memory to another. This week the children have begun to write their own story related to the film. Check out the film for yourself and read the story openings below:

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v17.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D3cf6d8c2a1c317f3%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331676633%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D6271BFEE53B2593061DC42449BDFB815E4AB862F.58F07FE0AFC7445C75140F411E9D80A6DBAD27D7%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D3cf6d8c2a1c317f3%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DTXoMByztSSuHrSPYfs3Njtc-vmk&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Emily R writes: Peter sat on the stool of the grand piano. It was sleek, black and in perfect condition. He slid his fingers along the smooth white keys until he tapped one. Suddenly, he was playing Sylvie’s favourite song. He remembered her beautiful grey hair that she always wore in a bun. He remembered the way she would always undo it until she got it perfect. Feeling her presence grow stronger, a part of his heart came back to life. A small weak smile formed on his wrinkled and weary face. She was with him. He knew it! She slowly kissed him. He felt it. Maybe she didn’t die after all! Realising this was a desperate hope Sylvie’s presence faded, taking Peter’s smile with her.

Remin also writes: Henry sat in a very dim room. He sat with his treasured Piano. It was his late wife's piano. She loved this piano Henry thought. Suddenly, Henry started playing his wife Maria's favourite tune. Henry could not control his fingers. Slowly, he could imagine his wife's image. He felt Maria sitting beside him. Faintly, he sensed a light touch on his cheek. Henry knew it was his wife. It made him very happy. Henry could not measure the love of his wife still inside his heart. "While there is blood in my veins, I will never forget her." said Henry.

I'm sure you'll agree - these are two very good examples of story openings. I can't wait to read the completed stories. Well Done Emily and Remin!

Welcome back!

Welcome back - we hope that all had a peaceful and enjoyable Christmas break despite the cold weather and variety of winter bugs that invaded our festivities.

We have another busy term ahead and already 5B have been very busy this week - here is what Chiemela and Eleanor had to say about some of the work:

The New Year

I hope everybody has had a good year so far, and welcome back to everybody reading this.

Y5B have been talking about NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS.
A resolution is a kind of promise you make to yourself about something you want to achieve. Everyone one was enthusiastic about this and we came up with some really good ones here are some examples.

. To learn my 12 times tables off by heart.
. To not let myself get distracted in class.
. To get fit and healthy.
. And not to eat too much chocolate.

All these things will take a bit of time and effort but if you take time and think about this carefully, as they say in JOHN BRAMSTON if you believe you can achieve.

Goodbye!!!!!!!!!

Chiemela M

Power point

In ICT we have started a new project. We have been looking at power point presentations. Some of us had done them before, but for others it was very new. We were very lucky though as we had plenty of help from those of us who had been to computer club and our teacher. As our topic we had to design a quiz using power point. It was hard for those who had never used it before but we made some excellent progress. Last week some of us showed our presentations in sharing assembly. We are all very excited and hope to learn more.

By Eleanor Bird

Art

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SUu51FRYjAI/AAAAAAAAAoE/cNPWXAvJmbg/s320/PICT0190%5B1%5D" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281519309621332994" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SUu50i9s1tI/AAAAAAAAAn8/5JB-EFTjXe0/s320/PICT0188%5B1%5D" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281519300411971282" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KUx6Mh8y-qM/SUu5z_ppqlI/AAAAAAAAAn0/FDGH5EGYmH0/s320/PICT0179%5B1%5D" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281519290932636242" />
In art we took pictures of different objects around the school. We talked and ate delicious food. We played musical chairs, musical statues, pass the parcel, pass the bean bag and fruit salad We had a fun day. I want to say a huge thank you to the people who brought food. We ate a lot and by the end of the day some of us felt sick, but it is not their fault the food was so good. We had so much unhealthy food. Sorry Miss Jennings but it is Christmas! The name of the pantomine was ‘Dick Whittington’ it’s a little funny name we know. The character names were: Captain Blood, he was the baddy and we all shouted and booed him. Elvis the cat was Dick Withington’s only friend. He goes with Dick Withington anywhere he goes. We all had an amazing time screaming and shouting and laughing. They even got us singing! There was a boy called Jack and after the show we all had some of his sweets. We enjoyed it! It was great fun and we all participated, children and teachers were given the opportunity to be characters in the story. We learnt how much fun telling stories together can be. We can't wait to go again!

Back to school

Welcome Back!
We hope you all enjoyed the half term break.
This half term is already looking to be as busy as the last. In history, we will be studying the Victorians, in particular what life was like for children. We will continue to look at changing states of materials in science and we will be making musical instruments in DT.
We have also arranged to visit Hainault Library on the 27th November. The children will participate in a workshop that serves to encourage children to become more involved in reading.
